STAC NOTE STAC NOTE
GENERAL DIALING INFORMATION
(Applies to ReachOut - Versions 3.X, 4.X, 5.X)
STAC FAX 8304 (05-25-1995)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND
This document provides general dialing information to help
resolve problems that exist when communicating with a modem
across phone lines. Note: The following files are being altered
in the solutions below: MTABLE.RCH & MODEM.RCH. Make backup
copies of these files before performing these procedures.
PROBLEM
The telephone line that the viewer or host machine is dialing out
from has æCall WaitingÆ that causes interference or disconnection
when using a modem.
SOLUTION
Change the dialing prefix.
If you are using Windows
Use the Configuration icon, then Setup. Change the dialing prefix
from ATDT to ATDT *70.
If you are using DOS
Run SETUP.EXE from the ReachOut directory. Under Comm Settings
menu select Dialing Prefix. Change the dialing prefix from ATDT
to ATDT *70.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM
Host needs to answer after more than one ring.
SOLUTION
The modem information must be changed by editing the modem
string.
If you are using Windows
Use the configuration icon, choose Setup, Adv. Setup, then Modem
Config. Select your modem, then select Edit. Change the answer
string from ATS0=1 to ATS0=X, where X is the number of rings.
Press OK, then Exit, then Yes, then OK. Re-select your modem from
the list to pull in the new answer string then OK. Exit Windows,
unload (WINUNLDM.BAT or UNLOADMH.BAT) and restart ReachOut.
If you are using DOS
Run MODEMCFG.EXE from the ReachOut directory, select your modem
from the list and press Enter then æEÆ for Edit. Change the
answer string from ATS0=1 to ATS0=X, where X is the number of
rings. Press Enter to go thru the other areas until you are back
at the modem list, then press ESC to return to DOS. From ReachOut
directory run SETUP.EXE and pull down the Comm Settings menu to
Modem Select, and re-select your modem from the list. Unload
(WINUNLDM.BAT or UNLOADMH.BAT) and restart ReachOut.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM
Connection timing out before a full connection has been made.
This happens when you use a remote on/off computer controller,
multiple ring host machine, or remote security devices.
SOLUTION
Change the dialing prefix.
If you are using Windows
Use the configuration icon, choose Setup and change the dialing
prefix from ATDT to ATS7=255DT. From the Configuration icon
choose Setup, then Adv. Setup, and change Dial Timeout to 4
minutes.
If you are using DOS
Run SETUP.EXE, from the ReachOut directory, under Comm Settings
select Dialing Prefix and change it from ATDT to ATS7=255DT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM
Need to dial using a credit card number or dialing using a credit
card is not connecting/working.
DISCUSSION
There are limitations in most modems to the number of characters
that the dialing buffer can hold and limitations in ReachOut to
the number of characters that can be stored (40). The number of
characters also includes the dialing prefix (i.e. ATDT). You also
need to add pauses into the dialing string to wait for additional
tones from the phone services.
SOLUTIONS
1. Use a comma between numbers to insert a 1 second pause to
the dialing between the connect# and credit card# and phone#
(these count as characters).
2. Eliminate the unnecessary characters (hyphens, spaces) to
reduce the # of characters needed to dial.
3. Use the terminal emulator to create a dialing string of more
than 40 characters. From the viewer menu, use the link menu
to load terminal emulator. Create the phone book entry from
there that will hold up to 60 characters and will dial from
the viewer menu.
4. Use the pulse dialing method (ATDP) instead of ATDT as your
dialing prefix. This will allow dialing in some countries
where they do not support tone dialing systems.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM
You need to have the host automatically dial the viewer when you
run the host menu in Windows or the DOS batch file (GHM.BAT).
SOLUTION
Add ATDT###-#### and a carriage return to the end of the modem
reset string (where ###-#### is the phone number to dial).
If you are using Windows
Use the configuration icon, choose Setup, Adv. Setup, Modem
Config., and select your modem from the list and press Edit. Add
ATDT###-#### and the carriage return to the end of the reset
string. Press Ok, then Exit, then Yes, then Ok. Re-select the
modem form the list for the changes to take effect.
If you are using DOS
Run MODEMCFG.EXE from the ReachOut directory, select your modem
then press Enter, then "E" for edit. Add ATDT###-#### and
carriage return to the end of the reset string. Press enter thru
the other sections until you are back at the modem list, then
press ESC to return to DOS. Run SETUP.EXE and from the Comm
Settings menu choose modem select and re-select the modem from
the list for the changes to take effect.
